I recently needed to find a web site that offered version control services. I was having server issues and needed to find a reliable place to keep my code. Below is a list of sites that I found and some info about each one. Please add comments if you like or dislike any of these.

Note: The “cost” list below only shows the basic packages. Visit the sites for other plan details.

    http://github.com/ – uses git – pricing starts at $7.00 for 600MB and 5 repos.

No relation, not even a customer. Just saw they weren’t on the list.

There is also http://bitbucket.org/ for mecurial. Prices start at $5.00 for 500MB and 5 repos and unlimited public. Or free with 1 private 150mb space and unlimited public repos.

@Tony Wang – From my quick glance at kenai.com it seemed that the version control services are only availabe to open source projects. I’m guessing a project would need to be deemed an open source project by the site admins before u would get any free version control services. I think that is also how google code and source forge work and that is why I did not list any of those. This list is for version control services without such restrictions. thx for commenting.

    Same as ProjectLocket

@Guillaume Jay – Thx for the info. I’m starting to think I should have two lists one for the free services and one for the paid.

I think that is a good idea.

I frequently use opensvn.csie.org which comes with a built in trac tracker as well. It’s free to use. Only problem that I have had with it are infrequent down times. Been a while since I ve experienced one though.
